There are menstrual cups (internal option) and washable sanitary pads to choose from. Menstrual sponges are another internal option but WEN doesn’t recommend these because of concerns about potential environmental and health impacts, including a link with Toxic Shock Syndrome. Several samples were found to contain sand, grit and bacteria.
All cups are worn internally and come in 2 sizes, B (before) and A (after) vaginal childbirth. They will last for about 10 years.
The cost is roughly £17.99 each.
To wash:
These are washed regularly in hot soapy water and sterilised in the same way
as baby equipment between periods. If out and about they can be wiped with
a tissue and washed at a more convenient time.
There are basically 2 types of washable pads which come in various colours, patterns, length and sizes, e.g. panty liners, standard pads and maxi or night-time pads. They are made primarily from cotton, hemp or fleece. Prices vary between £2 and £7 each although buying in packs can often be cheaper. The average number that manufacturers recommend is 6 -10 pads of various sizes according to your flow. There are many brands to choose from and there are many variations on the same theme:
All-in-ones
These have wings which fit around underwear and secure with poppers.
Wraps with inserts
These are often envelope style with an opening in which absorbent liners can
be added. These also have wings and secure with popper around underwear.
